What do you do in a lesson?

Lessons are run according to the student’s needs on the day, and any long-term goals. Often we start with a warm up, and then move on to learning new pieces, or answering any questions or problems the student may have. We also try to allow time for listening activities, improvisation or composition, theory and reading music, as well as plenty of time for some musical games.

What happens if I miss a lesson?

You can view our studio policy HERE, which covers absences and other studio procedures.

What do I need?

To begin with you will just need an instrument at home, and a quiet space to practice. If you need help finding an instrument we are happy to help, just let us know! All students receive a folder when they start lessons, where we write lesson notes and keep any other worksheets or sheet music.

What is a good age to start lessons?

In our experience, the best age to begin individual lessons is around 7 years old. At this age, children have developed the fine motor skills needed to play an instrument. They also know other necessary basics, such as counting and the alphabet, and are able to concentrate for a longer period of time. We also teach beginner adult students, so there is no age limit!

How much practice do I need to do?

Students will need to set aside time to practice regularly throughout the week to make progress between lessons, however the time spent practicing will vary depending on age and level. Beginners should aim for at least 5 minutes (ideally 5 days a week or more!), while students sitting grade exams would need to allow at least 30 minutes.
